  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mary E. Young -- 5 ouf of 5 stars : Set a year before the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, this book follows Yuriko, a twelve year old Japanese girl. Yuriko seems much like any other twelve year old. She worries about her widowed father, grumbles about her controlling Aunt and avoids her annoying little cousin. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from jason -- Slow plot and overall unintresting : The Last Cherry Blossom by Kathleen Burkinshaw is a book about a thirteen-year-old girl named Yuriko living in Hiroshima Japan during WW11. She lives with her Papa who is a wealthy newspaper writer, her Aunt Kimiko, and her younger cousin Genji. Yuriko goes to a nice nearby school that is excused early almost every day because of air raid drills to protect the Japanese residents from bombings. As the war continued she heard of many fake victories for Japan due to propaganda. Her Papa soon remarried because he was widowed previously. Soon Yuriko found out that her real father was never present and her Papa is actually her grandfather. As the people of Japan do not know of the battles that Japan has lost, many are drafted to fight for the Emperor in the war and many in Yuriko's life never come back. Soon after Germany had surrendered to the U.S., America had decided to finish off the war by going for Japan. After the bombing of Hiroshima, the author explains the devastation experienced through Yuriko's eyes. While I do believe the author did an excellent job describing the horror of the bombing and Japanese culture and how it is different from what we know in America, pages one through one-hundred sixty were very slow. It could not hook me as the reader and I was not interested throughout the book. The pages told us about Yuriko's daily life with no interesting plot. The small amount of plot that did occur was her having a new discovery in her true family, which was not as interesting as it sounds. It seemed like the author was almost just experimenting and not writing a true story, which was unfortunate because it took up three-fourths of the book. I would not recommend this book unless you are extremely interested in old Japanese culture because there was a great explanation from the author of it. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kristin Crouch -- Loved this book : Loved this book. World War 2 from a young Japanese girl’s perspective. Even though it doesn’t focus on the war specifically, my WW2 buffs love it. But there is so much more to it. The main character is lovable, and as she becomes less protected by her Papa, she learns and questions all that is happening around her. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joan Y. Edwards -- Life in Japan before and after the Bombing through the Eyes of a Young Girl : The Last Cherry Blossom follows Yuriko as she builds friendships and understanding of how important her family is to her. The book shows the Japanese traditions and how a young girl would feel about wearing traditional fancy kimonos. It shows a contrast between the beautiful land and buildings to the devastation after the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It shows how the newspapers were monitored by the emperor. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Country Kinder -- Great Read : I read this book for a virtual book discussion group. I had not heard of it before. Even though it was written for 6th-8 grade middle school students, it is a wonderful read for any age group. I totally enjoyed it. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah the book reviewer -- War Is not the Answer : Ms. Burkinshaw's book is a winner. It will break your heart and still fill you with hope. Based on the life her mother, who lost her whole family during the A-Bomb attack on Hiroshima, the story is a testament to what damage war does to all involved. This being the week of December 7th, the day declared to live in infamy 75 years ago. The devastation war brings to all involved is strongly brought to life in this gripping tale. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- It was okay : I appreciated the historical aspect of the story but I feel the writing wasn’t the most sophisticated, likely because it was written in the voice of a pre-teen. The story telling just sort of fell flat for me. Even the moments that should have been sad didn’t quite hit me in the way other sad moments in other books have because of the writing. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from pauline leister -- A different perspective : To hear about the life of the mainstream folk and how easily life can be turned upside down by the senselessness of war never ceases to amaze me . Especially since the cruelty and tragedy to innocents continues. How atrocious also the propaganda of their own leader. ( Reviewed in Australia on March 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jo -- Great book : Beautiful story. Excellent reading. Wonderfully crafted. ( Reviewed in Australia on May 31, 2017 )
